Playing with Colour                                      2013-16

One of the things I have really connected with in studying and doing art is colour theory. I love using complementary colours to intensify each other or just playing with the colour properties of paint. I have studied where colours come from and the physical properties of the pigments (and media) I am using. I have often said what is the point of painting a realistic image, that's what photos are for, I like to totally change the colours, usually to compliments.

Created Order came about because I had to do a process painting. Each dice roll gave we a spacing for the lines or a colour (red, blue, yellow, black, white, nothing).

Masstone and Undertone are just that, looking at the masstone from undiluted paint compared to the undertone of heavily medium filled paint.

Interactions is purely a look at colour. The paintings show three or four evenly spaced colours from around the colour wheel, and warm verses cool primaries. The colours may be different versions of normal though, like burnt sienna for orange. By varying the exact hue you can create very harmonious or discordant colour combinations.

The horse paintings use complementary colours for the backgound and main horse colour and the split complements for the details of the horse. For example, Green Horse uses red-green as the main colour and red-blue/yellow for details.
